Poinciana’s team is comprised of a group of partners who also maintain leadership roles in affiliated CPA firm Smith, Stohlman, James & Gardere, P.A. (SSJG):

Joshua B. Angell, CFA, ASA, CPA/ABV

Partner, Chief Investment Officer

Josh Angell is the head of investments of Poinciana Advisors Group, LLC and is responsible for formulating investing strategies, constructing portfolios, managing client risks, and serving as lead financial advisor for our high-net and ultra-high-net worth clients. Josh joined Poinciana Advisors Group in 2009, and became a managing member in 2018.

Josh graduated Summa Cum Laude (Valedictorian) from Florida State University with a B.S in Accounting and Finance. He also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation from CFA Institute, which he obtained on his first-attempt. The CFA program is a rigorous institutional training curriculum covering many areas of investment management, which Josh has incorporated into the asset management process for our clients. In addition to holding the CFA Charter, Josh is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Accredited in Business Valuation (ABV) by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). He is also an Accredited Senior Appraiser with a Business Valuation Specialty from the American Society of Appraisers.

In addition to his roles with Poinciana Advisors, Josh serves as a Partner of Smith, Stohlman, James & Gardere, P.A., our accounting affiliate, where he specializes in valuing closely held companies and advising high net worth clients on complex accounting and valuation related matters. Josh is also the co-author of the VPS Discounts for Lack of Marketability Guide and Toolkit, an industry treatise on illiquidity and illiquidity discounts.

Josh resides in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida where he enjoys playing guitar, reading, and spending time with his family. He has a passion for helping people achieve their long-term financial goals and educating them on the intricacies of the financial markets.

Matthew C. Smith, CPA/ABV, CVA

Partner, Head of Business Development

Matt Smith is a founding member and currently serves on the advisory board of Poinciana Advisors Group, LLC. Matt is primarily responsible for client relationship management and business development, and provides strategic insight to our advisory board.

Matt received his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of North Florida, and is currently a Partner and Shareholder of Smith, Stohlman, James & Gardere, P.A., our accounting affiliate, where he supports the business valuation and litigation services department. Matt is a Certified Public Accountant, registered to practice in the State of Florida, and is Certified in Financial Forensics and Accredited in Business Valuation by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He is also a Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA), and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts.

Matthew S. Stohlman, CPA/ABV, CFE, CFF

Partner, Financial Advisor

Matthew Stohlman is a founding member and financial advisor, and currently serves on the advisory board of Poinciana Advisors Group. Matt is primarily responsible for providing investment advisory services to clients, and financial and strategic direction to the firm.

Matthew earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, with a minor in international business, from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He is also currently a Shareholder and Partner of Smith, Stohlman, James & Gardere, P.A, our accounting affiliated, where he specializes in advising high net worth in complex accounting matters and divorce. Prior to joining Poinciana Advisors Group, Matthew was manager of the consulting department of Rubin, Brown, Gornstein & Co., LLP in St. Louis, Missouri and has testified as an expert and fact witness in courts in Florida and Missouri.  He is Accredited in Business Valuation (ABV) by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and a Certified Fraud Examiner by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. Matthew is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants. 

Larry Swedroe 

Strategic Partner

Larry was among the first authors to publish a book that explained the science of investing in layman’s terms, “The Only Guide to a Winning Investment Strategy You’ll Ever Need.” The second edition was published in 2005. He has since authored eight more books: “What Wall Street Doesn’t Want You to Know” (2001), “Rational Investing in Irrational Times” (2002), “The Successful Investor Today” (2003), “Wise Investing Made Simple” (2007), “Wise Investing Made Simpler” (2010), “The Quest for Alpha” (2011), “Think, Act, and Invest Like Warren Buffett” (2012) and his latest book Enrich Yourself (2024). He has also co-authored nine books about investing: “The Only Guide to a Winning Bond Strategy You’ll Ever Need” with Joe Hempen (2006); “The Only Guide to Alternative Investments You’ll Ever Need” with Jared Kizer (2008); “The Only Guide You’ll Ever Need for the Right Financial Plan” with Kevin Grogan and Tiya Lim (2010); “Investment Mistakes Even Smart People Make with RC Balaban (2012); “Reducing the Risk of Black Swans with Kevin Grogan (2014, second edition 2018); “The Incredible Shrinking Alpha” with Andrew Berkin (2015, second edition 2020); “Your Complete Guide to Factor-Based Investing” with Andrew Berkin (2016); “Your Complete Guide to a Successful and Secure Retirement” with Kevin Grogan (2019, second edition 2021); and “Your Essential Guide to Sustainable Investing” with Sam Adams (April 2022).

Larry regularly reviews the findings published in dozens of peer-reviewed financial journals, evaluates the outcomes and uses the result to inform the firm’s formal investment strategy recommendations. He has had his own articles published in the Journal of Accountancy, Journal of Investing, AAII Journal, Personal Financial Planning Monthly, and the Journal of Portfolio Management. Larry’s dedication to helping others has made him a sought-after national speaker. He has made appearances on national television shows airing on NBC, CNBC, CNN and Bloomberg Personal Finance. Larry is a prolific writer, contributing regularly to multiple outlets, including Morningstar, Wealth Management, The Evidence Based Investor, Financial Advisor, Alpha Architect, and Seeking Alpha. Larry is not an employee of Poinciana Advisors Group, LLC nor is he an investment advisor representative with Poinciana Advisors Group, LLC.
